Response One to â€Å"Criteria of Negro Art† W. E. B. Dubois’s Criteria of Negro art leaves me with mixed feelings. At times I find his arguments compelling, at others bitter, dichotomous, and overly idealistic, yet throughout I find oftentimes found his prose refreshingly clear and at times even beautiful. In addition, the essay seems to have a sense of urgency to achieve a purity of expression, an external form to manifest the internal latent â€Å"Beauty in Black,† an ideal to my mind at least, reminiscent of the ancient Greeks who sought to emulate the metaphysical archetypes of truth, beauty, and goodness. Nevertheless, then as now, art is also business, fraught with financial constraints and racial biases to this day. The aforementioned are perhaps his most compelling arguments consist of the fact that, yes, race with its often concurrent circumstances, can and do limit options not only for the artist but art appreciation. Secondly, I think he is right when he relates the ultimate futility of materialism; however, I doubt that African-Americans, by virtue of the past, are any less susceptible to these phenomena than their white counterparts. Indeed, even when the United States elected an African-American President, while a turning point in American history, it didn’t automatically herald a Golden Age of enlightenment. If anything it was an anticlimax; it merely revealed that revealed people are not their skin colors; and that we still have the same issue no matter what race or gender resides in the oval office. After graduating from high school, I was accepted into my city’s medical school and started my career as a physician. However, Venezuela is currently filled with corruption, economic burdens, and violence; thus, after one semester, I decided to leave everything behind and move to the United States for a better future. We will look at some of these predictors, the constructs they attempt to measure, and how this might aid in predicting future behavior. There have been a lot of studies, interventions, programs, and models designed to reduce or predict violence among our youth. The strongest predictor being past violent behavior. Most of these studies have been linked to some type of deficiencies in the home environment and school environment. The overwhelming question facing America now is - Why would a student who has almost anything he desires, living in an upper middle class neighborhood, bring a gun to school with the purpose of killing his classmates and teachers? The question for researchers is - Can we predict which students are likely to engage in this type of behavior? The resounding answer so far seems to be negative. There is not any test, inventory, or self-report scale which can tell us which students will act out in this manner. However, reviewing the literature there appears to be different types of measurement when looked at aggregately, might identify those students who would be at higher risk although they do not show a past history of violence and therefore fall outside of the previously researched areas. Some of the things we would hope to assess in identifying violence-related attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors among youths would be broken into three categories: 1. The US government has spent a considerable amount of money trying to counter IED insurgencies but despite this, the latter can still find ways to counter these efforts.   Several long term issues have been raised.   First, bombs become more complex in their make up as time goes by.   IED bombings started with a simple made bomb that eventually evolved.   Currently, the US military have discovered that a new type of bomb has already been in use starting the summer of 2006.   Infrared bombs are now at large and they are even harder to track since they run on different signals as those detecting tools the military has. (Magnuson, 2006). Hence, countering the former low-technology bombs requires continuous development of high-technology solutions.   This entails millions and millions of dollars to be spent on prevention as opposed to a few dollars an IED builder uses to make his weapon.  Ã‚   Second, as the US spends on developing long terms plans on combating insurgencies, the terrorists are also likewise building on their long term plans.   Extremist groups are now banking on education as a means of furthering their goals. They are using their $50 million funds to send their thousands of new recruits to get a university degree on radio engineering or information technology as opposed to using the funds to amass more weapons.   (Magnuson, 2006)   To date, the insurgent groups have already released a video mocking the attempts of the US government to stop them.   The video, released by a group who named themselves as â€Å"The Islamic State of Iraq† was entitled â€Å"The Fall and Decline of US Technology.† (Osman Martinez, 2007) The IED war indeed has turned into something ugly.   IED use surged during the year of 2004 to 2005 and even up to now, there are still ongoing cases regarding this problem.   The US government tries to counter this but still, insurgents are still able to survive.   Hence, the government should try to intensify its efforts and develop more plans to curb this rising problem.    Reference List 2008 funding request.
